Students in fifth grade (and sixth grade from some of our schools) from Cornwall, Mary Hogan, Ripton, and Salisbury participated in the first annual Youth Citizen Summit on February 15th. This summit, held at Middlebury College, was an opportunity for participants to explore the IB theme of How We Organize Ourselves, by examining topics around the idea that governments can promote or deny human rights. Nationally known singer, Nick Howard came from New York City to sing and record the chorus to the song "Our Time" with the students. One of the students in Bethany Morrissey's class wrote to him and told him about the summit because she thought his song would fit in, and he asked if he could come! During this interview, Nick Howard mentions his time with us at the Youth Citizen Summit.
Salisbury students engaged in various civics themed activities to complete Vermont’s Good Citizen Challenge this year. They earned a trip to the Vermont State House and met with Governor Phil Scott and Vermont Speaker of the House Mitzi Johnson. Representative Peter Conlon welcomed students to the floor. Students left with pocket constitutions and Good Citizen t-shirts. Thank you Seven Days deputy editor Cathy Resmer for organizing the challenge and the great experience today! Salisbury students are “Stuck in Vermont!”
