What is Empathy?
Empathy is when we understand other people’s emotions and care about what they’re feeling. It’s not feeling sorry for someone, it’s feeling with them.
Why is Empathy Important?
Our brains are hardwired for connection. Empathy fuels connection and bridges gaps between emotional experiences in people. When we show kindness and understanding for others we can feel the positive physical response in our own bodies.

Take one minute to talk about what you can do when you notice someone else’s feelings.
When someone is angry, I can…
When someone is sad, I can…
When someone is scared, I can…
Draw an Empathy X-Ray- Think of a time when you might have shown kindness and compassion for someone else and their feelings. Draw an outline of yourself and show how you felt on the inside at that time. This is your Empathy X-ray. Notice how showing love and kindness impacts us in a positive way.
Think about a character in the book you are reading, how are they feeling?
Listen to someone talk about a feeling or experience, repeat back what you heard about the emotions in their story.
